Lattafa Musamam Black Intense: Lavender, Nutmeg and Bitter Cocoa
Musamam Black Intense is the most interesting Lattafa release in years, and also one of the least predictable. It opens herbal and a little severe, with lavender, sage and a real hit of nutmeg over bergamot. It turns woody and quietly floral in the middle, and it finishes on something no other house can reproduce: Cocoa Pulse™, an ingredient Givaudan created exclusively for Lattafa by co-distilling cocoa butter absolute with akigalawood. Fragrantica’s launch coverage credits the composition to Givaudan perfumer Jordi Fernández, who used the cocoa material in overdose. Released in 2025, it is the third Musamam and a separate composition from the 2022 original. It sits in our Lattafa perfumes range as the dark aromatic.
The Scent Profile
Top: lavender, nutmeg, sage and bergamot. The opening is aromatic and dry rather than sweet. Lavender and sage have a slightly old-school barbershop feel, nutmeg adds warm spice, and bergamot gives a brief lift. Plenty of Fragrantica reviewers admit this first stretch threw them, and it’s worth knowing before you spray: the payoff comes later.
Heart: cedarwood, geranium, Rosyfolia and Mahonial. Cedar gives the fragrance a dry backbone. Geranium and Rosyfolia, a green rose-geranium material, add a fresh rosy thread, and Mahonial brings a dewy, lily-like softness. Those florals keep the middle from collapsing into dark wood.
Base: Cocoa Pulse™, tonka bean, maple, Ambrofix™ and patchouli. This is the signature. The cocoa is bitter and spicy-woody rather than chocolate-bar sweet. Tonka and maple add a soft, syrupy warmth, patchouli gives grip, and Ambrofix, a modern amber material, pushes the whole thing outwards. The result is bittersweet rather than sweet.
How It Compares
This is the rare Lattafa where the manufacturer’s story points away from any designer. Lattafa presents Black Intense as a deeper chapter of its own Musamam line, and Fragrantica’s launch article names no inspiration. The central material is a Givaudan captive that other houses can’t buy, so a true clone of this fragrance isn’t possible.
In reviews, the name that comes up most is Hugo Boss Bottled Absolu, which a handful of Fragrantica reviewers say has a similar chocolate-patchouli effect. Others mention Calvin Klein Defy Parfum, Amouage Guidance and Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Le Parfum, but no single comparison dominates. We’d call it a loose family resemblance at most. The lavender-sage opening and cedar-floral heart take it in a different direction from any of those.
Lattafa Perfumes has no affiliation with, licence from, or endorsement by Hugo Boss, Calvin Klein, Amouage, Jean Paul Gaultier or any other brand named here. We name them only to help you place the style.
Musamam Black Intense Performance & When To Wear
We couldn’t read Fragrantica’s numerical longevity and sillage votes, so there are no figures here. The written reviews are consistent, though: most call the performance “beast mode”, with strong projection and a scent that clings to clothing, and several talk about still smelling it many hours after a single spray. The same reviews are split on the scent itself. Some call it niche quality at an affordable price; others call it overhyped and definitely not a safe blind buy.
It’s a cold-weather evening fragrance. The cocoa-tonka base comes alive in chilly air, and in summer heat the projection can become overwhelming. Start with one or two sprays.
Who It’s For
Black Intense is for people who like dark, aromatic, slightly unusual fragrances and are happy to wait out a challenging opening. If your collection is mostly fresh citrus or sugary gourmands, it may come as a shock. Fragrantica lists it for women and men; Lattafa’s own site files it under men’s, and most reviewers describe it as leaning masculine. We list it as unisex and men’s to reflect both.
How It Compares with the Other Houses We Stock
The closest cousin on our shelves is Khadlaj Zayaan Gold (£29.99). It shares the lavender-over-tonka backbone and a patchouli base, but opens with syrupy plum, cinnamon and cardamom rather than sage and nutmeg, so it reads sweeter and fruitier. Zayaan Gold has no cocoa. If it’s the lavender you’re after and you want something lighter, Khadlaj Azure Velvet (£24.99) takes lavender, bergamot and mint to a powdery incense base. It’s fresher and far easier to wear in daylight.
Back to the Original Musamam
Black Intense grew out of the original Musamam (£29.99), but the two smell quite different. The original is built on saffron, cedar and incense, which makes it woody, smoky and a touch more formal. This version trades that for lavender, cocoa and tonka, a sweeter and softer blend for winter evenings. Compare them on our Musamam collection page.
Price, Size & What You Get
It costs a little more than most of the Lattafa range, at about 33p per millilitre for the full 100ml. The difference buys you a genuine captive ingredient rather than just a fancier bottle.

Lattafa Musamam Black Intense FAQs
What does Musamam Black Intense smell like?
Herbal lavender, sage and nutmeg at first, then dry cedar with soft rosy florals, and finally a bittersweet base of cocoa, tonka, maple and patchouli. Dark and aromatic rather than sweet.
What are the full Musamam Black Intense notes?
Top: lavender, nutmeg, sage, bergamot. Heart: cedarwood, geranium, Rosyfolia, Mahonial. Base: Cocoa Pulse™, tonka bean, maple, Ambrofix™, patchouli. Fragrantica and Lattafa’s own site list the same thirteen notes.
Is Musamam Black Intense a dupe of anything?
No official inspiration exists. It’s built around a Givaudan ingredient made only for Lattafa. On Fragrantica, reviewers most often mention Boss Bottled Absolu for a similar chocolate-patchouli effect, but that’s a loose likeness, not a copy. Lattafa has no affiliation with Hugo Boss.
What is Cocoa Pulse™?
An ingredient Givaudan made exclusively for Lattafa by co-distilling cocoa butter absolute with akigalawood. Perfumer Jordi Fernández describes it as a spicy, bittersweet gourmand, and he used it in overdose here.
How long does it last?
Fragrantica reviewers mostly describe the performance as very strong, lasting a long time on skin and longer on clothing. We couldn’t read the numerical vote tallies, so we don’t give an hour figure.
Is it for men or women?
Fragrantica lists it for both; Lattafa files it under men’s. It wears distinctly masculine for most people, but anyone who likes dark aromatic scents can wear it.
How much is Musamam Black Intense in the UK?
£32.99 for 100ml Eau de Parfum at Khaleej Scents, with free UK delivery and no minimum spend.
How is it different from the original Musamam?
The 2022 original is a saffron-cedar-incense woody. Black Intense (2025) is a completely different lavender-and-cocoa composition. They share a name, not a formula.
Notes verified against Fragrantica and lattafa.com in September 2026. The sources agree on all thirteen notes. The launch year and perfumer (Jordi Fernández) come from Fragrantica, and Cocoa Pulse™ details come from Fragrantica’s launch article. Comparisons and performance notes summarise Fragrantica reviews and are attributed as such. We do not claim any wear-testing figures of our own. Written by Shaheen Shah Abrar, Khaleej Scents.
