Lattafa Musamam is the original of the Musamam line: saffron, mandarin and lavender over dry Virginia cedar and amberwood, drying down to a smoky base of incense, akigalawood and labdanum. It is not sweet, which makes it rare in this price bracket. 100ml Eau de Parfum, £29.99, free UK delivery.

Lattafa Musamam: Saffron, Cedar and Slow-Burning Incense

Musamam is the Lattafa for people who say they don’t like Lattafa. Most of the house’s best-known bottles are sweet: syrupy ambers, sticky dates, caramel. Musamam is none of those. It opens on saffron with mandarin and lavender, turns dry and papery with cedar and geranium, and ends on a resinous haze of incense, akigalawood and labdanum. It came out in 2022 and is the original of the line. The Black Intense and White Intense bottles that followed are separate compositions, not stronger versions. In the Lattafa perfumes range it is the smoky, grown-up woody.

The Scent Profile

Top: saffron, Italian mandarin and lavender. Saffron is the note you notice first: leathery, slightly metallic and warm. Mandarin gives a short burst of brightness, and lavender adds an aromatic, almost barbershop edge. The saffron stops that turning soapy. For the first ten minutes this is the part that can feel a little sharp.

Heart: amberwood, Virginia cedar and Egyptian geranium. The fragrance dries out here. Virginia cedar gives the pencil-shaving character, amberwood adds a mineral, radiant warmth, and geranium puts a faint rosy-green thread through the wood so it doesn’t feel flat.

Base: Somalian incense, akigalawood and cistus labdanum. This is why people buy Musamam. The incense is soft and resinous rather than churchy. Akigalawood, a peppery material derived from patchouli, gives it a dark woody grip. Labdanum from the cistus shrub adds a sticky, leathery-amber depth. Together they make a smoky finish that reads more niche than mass market.

How It Compares

Lattafa does not name an inspiration for Musamam. On Fragrantica, reviewers most often compare it to Gucci Guilty Absolute, pointing to a similar dry, leathery-woody character. A smaller group mention the original YSL M7, and a couple mention Bvlgari’s Kobraa. Those are community comparisons, not claims from Lattafa, and they don’t agree on one reference, which is a good sign that Musamam has its own personality. The differences we’d point to are the saffron-lavender opening and the incense-labdanum base, which make it more resinous and less purely leathery than Guilty Absolute. Some reviewers also find a sharp, almost fuel-like edge in the opening, which none of those designers really have.

Lattafa Perfumes has no affiliation with, licence from, or endorsement by Gucci, YSL, Bvlgari or any other brand named here. We name them only to help you place the style.

We could not read Fragrantica’s numerical longevity and sillage vote tallies, so we won’t quote a percentage or an hour figure. The written reviews there, from a community rating of about 3.5 out of 5 across roughly 530 votes, mostly describe Musamam as very long-lasting, with strong projection for the first few hours before it settles closer. Reviewers consistently treat it as a cold-weather evening fragrance and say it is not for summer. We agree with that framing: incense and labdanum get heavy in the heat.

Two sprays is enough. It suits dinners, evenings out, cold days in a wool coat, and anywhere you want to smell composed rather than loud.

Who It’s For

Musamam is for anyone who finds most affordable Arabian fragrances too sweet. If you enjoy incense, dry woods, saffron and leather, you’ll understand it straight away. If you came to Lattafa for Khamrah or Yara, this will feel austere. Lattafa and Fragrantica both list it as unisex, and nothing in the composition is gendered, though in practice more men buy it.

How It Compares with the Other Houses We Stock

The obvious next step up is Bujairami Shadow Script (£49.99). It shares saffron, incense and akigalawood with Musamam but adds papyrus, suede and rose at Extrait strength. Shadow Script is denser and more challenging, and Musamam is the easier way in. For a fresher take on the incense idea, Khadlaj Icon (£29.99) puts bergamot and lavender over incense and labdanum. It shares Musamam’s lavender-and-resin link but finishes on softer amber, suede and sandalwood, so it is easier to wear during the day.

Musamam in Black

Musamam has a darker, sweeter sister: Musamam Black Intense (£32.99). Instead of the saffron, cedar and incense you get here, it pairs lavender with cocoa and tonka, so it feels more gourmand and cosy. The original is the drier, smokier wear for formal evenings; Black Intense is the one for cold nights when you want comfort. Both are on our Lattafa Musamam page.

Lattafa Musamam FAQs

What does Lattafa Musamam smell like?

Saffron and lavender with a flash of mandarin, then dry cedar, amberwood and geranium, then a smoky, resinous base of incense, akigalawood and labdanum. Dry and woody rather than sweet.

What are the full Musamam notes?

Top: saffron, Italian mandarin, lavender. Heart: amberwood, Virginia cedar, Egyptian geranium. Base: Somalian incense, akigalawood, cistus labdanum. Lattafa lists “cistus concrete” and Fragrantica lists “labdanum”. These are the same resin from the cistus plant, so the two sources agree.

Is Musamam a dupe of Gucci Guilty Absolute?

Lattafa doesn’t say so. Fragrantica reviewers most often compare it to Guilty Absolute, with YSL M7 a less common suggestion. It shares a dry, leathery-woody feel with those but is more resinous and incense-led. Treat it as a similar style, not a copy. Lattafa has no affiliation with Gucci or YSL.

How long does Musamam last?

Most Fragrantica reviewers describe it as very long-lasting, with strong projection early on. We couldn’t read the numerical vote tallies, so we won’t give an hour figure.

Is Musamam unisex?

Yes. Lattafa and Fragrantica both list it for women and men. It is bought more often by men, but saffron, cedar and incense suit anyone who likes dry, smoky scents.

How much is Lattafa Musamam in the UK?

£29.99 for 100ml Eau de Parfum at Khaleej Scents, with free UK delivery and no minimum spend.

Is this the same as Musamam Black Intense or White Intense?

No. This is the 2022 original. Black Intense (2025) is a separate lavender-and-cocoa composition, and White Intense (2023) is another different fragrance. They share a name, not a formula.

Notes verified against Fragrantica and lattafa.com in September 2026. They agree apart from the naming of cistus/labdanum, which is the same material. Launch year from Fragrantica; no perfumer listed. Comparisons and performance summarise Fragrantica reviews and are attributed as such. No wear-testing figures of our own are claimed.
