Onyx Gold is the warm half of Khadlaj’s Onyx pair: a boozy, spiced amber that opens on rum, bitter orange and cardamom, sinks into dried fruit and sandalwood, and settles on myrrh, vanilla and tonka. It is loud, cosy and built for cold evenings — and at 4.43 out of 5 on Fragrantica, it is one of the best-rated Khadlaj releases of 2025.
It is also the Khadlaj people buy instead of Clive Christian Blonde Amber, a 2022 niche amber that costs £490 for 50ml on Clive Christian’s UK site. Khadlaj makes no inspired-by claim, but independent reviewers have made the comparison, two of them putting it at around 90%. That is why our Khadlaj dupes guide now grades it B+, up from C when we first published.
A quick correction: some listings, including an earlier version of this page, say “Montale Blonde Amber”. The fragrance reviewers compare Onyx Gold to is Clive Christian’s.
The Scent Pyramid at a Glance
Twelve notes as Fragrantica lists them. Khadlaj’s own listing differs slightly: it leaves rum out of the top and adds labdanum to the base.
A warm, boozy blast. Rum and bitter orange give a marmalade-and-spirits opening, with cardamom and ginger adding a sharp, aromatic spice.
Dried fruits and creamy sandalwood, lifted by the apricot-leather softness of osmanthus. Some wearers describe a rich, almost potpourri warmth here.
Resinous myrrh and powdery vanilla, tonka for warmth and patchouli for depth. Reviewers describe it as fairly linear: what you smell after an hour is what you keep.

Onyx Gold vs Clive Christian Blonde Amber — A Slimmed-Down Pyramid
Blonde Amber is a big composition — 24 notes on Fragrantica, from olibanum and white tobacco to orris and vetiver. Onyx Gold reads like its skeleton: eleven of its twelve notes appear in Blonde Amber’s pyramid, and the twelfth, white blossom, is a general stand-in for Blonde Amber’s tuberose and jasmine.

What reviewers say. Our dupes guide records two independent reviewers who each put Onyx Gold at around 90% of Blonde Amber, and one Fragrantica reviewer calls it “a fantastic interpretation of Clive Christian Blonde Amber”. The consistent difference is complexity: without Blonde Amber’s white tobacco and olibanum, Onyx Gold is simpler and less smoky. Some reviewers also hear Guerlain-style Grand Soir amber in it — Thunk102 calls it “Grand Soir without the grandma smell”. Khadlaj has no affiliation with Clive Christian, and Onyx Gold is sold as its own composition.

- Clive Christian, not Montale. If you are hunting a Montale amber, this is not that comparison.
