Island Vanilla Dunes is the most polished thing Khadlaj currently makes, and the one most likely to be mistaken for something three times the price. It also carries the name of a range it has almost nothing in common with. Here is the full picture. Browse the house on our Khadlaj Perfumes page.

| Season | Autumn and winter. Not a summer fragrance |
One ambiguity worth knowing: sources disagree on whether “bourbon” here means bourbon vanilla or bourbon whiskey. Reviewers split both ways, and in practice the fragrance reads as having a little of both — a creamy vanilla with a boozy edge.
What It Smells Like
Warm, creamy, spiced vanilla with genuine polish — the word reviewers keep reaching for is “cozy”. Cinnamon and cardamom give the opening lift so it never reads as flat sugar; guaiac wood and orange blossom add structure through the middle; and the praline-amber-musk base is dessert-adjacent without tipping into cheap.
The most useful review line we found: it “works nicely on a scarf and makes a jacket or warm skin feel a bit more cosy”. That is exactly the use case. It is also described as compliment-oriented and a very low-risk blind buy for anyone who already knows they like vanilla.
Performance
Seven to nine hours on skin, with strong projection for the first two to three hours before it settles into a closer scent bubble. On clothing it is detectable into the next day. Community scoring puts longevity at 7.8/10 and sillage at 7.5/10 — the strongest of the three Island fragrances.
One clear warning: do not overspray this in heat. Applied heavily in warm weather it turns syrupy and, in one reviewer’s words, slightly suffocating. Three sprays in winter is generous.
The Althaïr Question — Genuinely Contested
Island Vanilla Dunes is compared to Parfums de Marly Althaïr, and this is the most divided the Khadlaj community gets about any single fragrance.
- For: reviewers call it “the holy grail of the Althaïr DNA” and “a lovely interpretation”. Several rate it above the incumbent budget clone, saying it is better balanced and slightly sweeter.
- Against: at least one prominent reviewer has published a video titled, straightforwardly, “the worst Althaïr dupe”.
- The technical middle ground: Khadlaj’s version is fresher, creamier and more mass-appealing; Althaïr is denser, boozier and has more refined spice work.
Our reading: it is a close interpretation rather than a clone, and unusually well-regarded on its own merits — enough that some reviewers prefer it to the fragrances it is compared with. We grade it B+ in the Khadlaj dupes guide. If you own Althaïr, this will not replace it. If you don’t, you may never feel the gap.
It Has Nothing to Do With the Other Islands
Despite the shared name, this is not a flanker of Island (pineapple and coconut) or Island Dreams (grapefruit and musk). It is a spiced vanilla gourmand. If you liked either of the others, that tells you nothing about whether you will like this. Full breakdown in our Island line guide.
Who Should Buy It
- Buy it if: you want a warm spiced vanilla for cold weather, you want the most refined-smelling bottle in the range, you like boozy gourmands.
- Skip it if: you already own several vanilla gourmands — this is a crowded genre and you may find it redundant. Also skip if you mainly wear fragrance in summer.
- Consider instead: Fursan White for a drier powdery vanilla at a lower price; Cream Velvet for something sweeter and creamier.
FAQs

How long does Island Vanilla Dunes last? Seven to nine hours on skin, with strong projection for the first two to three hours and traces on clothing into the next day.
What is Island Vanilla Dunes a dupe of? Parfums de Marly Althaïr. Reviewers are split — some rate it the best available interpretation, at least one rates it the worst. It is fresher and creamier; Althaïr is denser and better-refined.
Is Island Vanilla Dunes the same as Khadlaj Island? No. Island is a pineapple-coconut tropical scent. Island Vanilla Dunes is a spiced vanilla gourmand. They share a name only.

On the Althaïr comparison we have reported the disagreement in full, including the reviewer who dislikes it, because a one-sided verdict here would be misleading.
